This weekend saw the start of another phase in the life of the 20 Prospect Clan. We were indoctrinated into the hockey cult.
Yes, after years of begging and pleading, we finally caved in and signed 20 Prospect Jr. up for hockey this winter. This past weekend saw his first practices at the SuperRink in Blaine, a sort of Mecca for the Hockey Cult which all are required to make a pilgrimage to at some point in their indoctrination.
20 P Jr. has been skating for about 4 years, and for the past 3 winters has had to be content to go play shinny at the outdoor rinks in our local parks. I have to admit, I have enjoyed lacing up the skates and going out on cold weekend mornings, and crystal dark winter evenings to slap the puck around with him. But this year he is wearing full pads, and playing real organized hockey.
I have to say, he was a little underwhelmed with the experience. Compared to skating free over an open surface of ice chasing a puck and playing a game, he was standing along the boards with 30 other kids doing the hokey pokey on skates. Not quite what he expected, but I am sure that it is merely the first test in his journey from accolyte to 33rd Level brother in the secret order of the Hockey Cult.
As for Mr. 20 Prospect, it was merely the first in many long afternoons spent sitting in a cold rink watching kids skate in circles. Just another phase in the life of a parent.
