You shift your head against my shoulder,
and pull the blanket closer to your chin
as we drift through the borderlands of dream.
My eyes hover on the edge of sleep,
and your breath slows, until
I know you have crossed over.
The late afternoon sunshine fades,
surrendering the world to shadows ,
the crystal sky frozen in hues of blue.
This longest of nights calls to us,
echoing through the stillness
like wolves in the distance.
Leaning my cheek against your auburn hair
I close my eyes and join you
as the moment fades into eternity.
